![]() Windows 95's Recycle Bin soon further reduced the need for UnErase. (The ERASE command is an alias for the DEL (Delete) command in the DOS command line). However, MS-DOS 5.0 adds a new UNDELETE.exe program, licensed from Norton competitor Central Point Software, which takes advantage of the same Delete Sentry control and Deletion-tracking files. UnErase takes advantage of DOS 5.0's Delete Tracking and Mirror File features to recover data. System Information now includes more detailed information on installed system. The speed of Speed Disk is improved over the previous release.ĭiskreet supports Data Encryption Standard. It includes Norton Disk Doctor, Disk Editor, Disk Tools, Speed Disk, Norton Cache, Disk Monitor, Diskreet, NDisk, System Information, NDOS. It includes Windows Program Manager support, but the tools are still DOS-based, so a set of icons were supplied. Norton Utilities 6.0 supports DOS 5 and Windows 3.1. This version also allows the choice of "classic" names (such as FF.EXE) or longer names (such as FINDFAST.EXE) these are configurable in the updated version of the Norton Integrator menu system. It also includes a licensed version of the 4DOS replacement for COMMAND.COM called NDOS. Release 5.0 adds new features, including Disk Editor, a utility to perform low level formatting on hard disks and changes such as password protection on the more "dangerous" utilities. It also includes Wipedisk Wipefile, a Batch Enhancer and a sector level disk editor a system information diagnostic utility and a disk caching program (NCACHE), which is between 10 - 50% faster than Microsoft's SMARTDrive when properly configured. Norton Disk Doctor is the major addition in this 1988 release. Well, industry wisdom has it that software becomes standard either by providing superior capabilities or by solving problems that were previously unsolvable. The UNERASE utility was what launched NU on its path to success. This allows files to be undeleted by restoring the first letter of the directory entry (a workaround of the FAT file system used in DOS). ![]() The initial 1982 release supports DOS 1.x and features the UNERASE utility. Norton Utilities for DOS and Windows 3.1 Version 1.0 Peter Norton's company was sold to Symantec (now known as Gen Digital) in 1990 and Peter Norton himself no longer has any connection to the brand or company. Release 2 came out about a year later, subsequent to the first hard drives for the IBM PC line. Peter Norton published the first version for DOS, The Norton Utilities, Release 1, in 1982. The latest version of the original series of Norton Utilities is Norton Utilities 16 for Windows XP/Vista/7/8 was released 26 October 2012. Norton Utilities is a utility software suite designed to help analyze, configure, optimize and maintain a computer. This may also be a good opportunity to see how your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks compare. ![]() Make sure you select the network you intend to use. Keep in mind your router may be broadcasting two separate Wi-Fi networks, a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Step 2: Find your Wi-Fi network in the list on the home screen by searching for your Wi-Fi’s network name in the SSID column. Step 1: Open NetSpot and ensure you’re in Discover Mode by clicking the DISCOVER tab in the top-left corner of the home screen. This allows you to compare the Wi-Fi signal strengths in your home to find out where your Wi-Fi weak points are. The only difference is that you move to the areas of your home you’re concerned about with the computer or device. Using NetSpot’s Discover Mode to determine Wi-Fi signal strength throughout your home is almost exactly the same as the Wi-Fi signal strength reading process described earlier. Hopefully, you see your Wi-Fi network at the top of the list. You should now be looking at a list of all the Wi-Fi networks in range of your computer, and the list should be sorted by the strongest average Wi-Fi signal. Click the PAUSE button in the lower-left corner to freeze the results. NetSpot’s data updates in real-time, so the results may fluctuate and switch spots constantly, making things difficult to analyze. We recommend choosing the column heading labeled Average to sort by the average signal level of each network. To sort the list of Wi-Fi networks, click one of the column headings. Step 3: Sort the networks by signal strength. That’s why it’s important to use tools like NetSpot to navigate your way through today’s crowded airwaves. Overlapping coverage from your neighboring signals isn’t ideal, but it’s also very common. Chances are your device is in range of dozens of Wi-Fi signals, most of which aren’t even coming from your home. If you’re expecting only to see your Wi-Fi network listed in the results, you’re probably in for a shock. ![]() In this guide, we show you how to use NetSpot to pick the best Wi-Fi frequency band, select the best Wi-Fi channels, and even find the Wi-Fi dead spots in your home. You can use this info to make changes like picking the best Wi-Fi settings in your router or moving your router to a better place in your home. It can also tell you exactly how strong your own Wi-Fi signal is in every part of your home. So, what does Netspot do? It provides signal strength readings for every Wi-Fi signal that’s in range of your home. NetSpot helps by giving you data specific to your home’s Wi-Fi network, allowing you to get to the bottom of Wi-Fi issues and come up with effective and permanent solutions rather than shooting in the dark with blanket troubleshooting fixes. Random signal drops, sluggish speeds, and spotty Wi-Fi reception all add up to a disappointing internet experience, and it can be hard to know if your troubleshooting efforts are making a difference. NetSpot is a free network analysis tool that can help you improve your home Wi-Fi. I can’t wait to write that story.īut let me answer the unasked question here. I’m lucky enough to live in a rent-controlled HDFC that welcomes only artistic tenants so that’s certainly a nurturing environment and since a local woman was murdered in my apartment it came with inspiration ensuite. The East Village as a neighborhood and my building in particular have been hugely influential in my being able to write fulltime. ![]() In fact, writer seems far too pleasant a verb to describe what I do word-worrier is more accurate.ĭo you think the East Village provides a nurturing/creative atmosphere for artistic endeavors? Do you find inspiration here? Most of my writing is extracted in private in a darkened corner of my fur-lined lair. Perfect for people-watching or more honestly, girl-watching. But when I do venture out, one of my favorite places is Café Pick Me Up on Avenue A and 9th Street. Mind you it might just be laptop-envy on my part. I’m not sure I’m socially equipped to sit in a cafe these days. The Helmholtzplatz in Berlin is a close second but only because it reminds me so much of Tompkins Square Park.ĭo you have a favorite place to write here? Are you able to accomplish much sitting at, say, a café or a library? The area around Tompkins Square is my favorite place in the world. I’ve always wanted to live here and I‘m very lucky to have found a rent-controlled building that welcome the likes of me. I’ve lived here altogether now for about 10 years - with a break of three years when I moved to Amsterdam. How long have you lived in the East Village? Collectively they’re known as "The Oxygen Thief Diaries."Īs a writer, do you envision continuing to remain Anonymous?īeing anonymous is part of the story. That’s when "Chameleon On a Kaleidoscope was born. But of course a diary has no finite ending and so it became obvious that there would be a second. Backups include encryption and error checking to help keep your data safe, while compression, incremental backups, and automatic backup file management minimize storage space. With Norton Ghost you have a choice of backup types: full system (disk image) or specific files and folders. There are discussions about the relative safety of doing a disk image while actually IN windows, of rebooting and doing the imaging from a DOS shell.
